The Shelly Qubino Wave i4 DC module has no relay, but can wirelessly control other Shelly Wave relays by sensing the position of up to 4 DC switches. Designed specifically for DC switches, it is also suitable for monitoring the status of gate motors, alarms, bells and other DC devices. Z-Wave 800 device, so you need a Z-Wave hub or USB coordinator to control it.

Details

The Shelly Qubino Wave i4 DC smart module is a member of the Shelly Wave family, which uses the Z-Wave protocol for communication (868.42 MHz in Europe). As Z-Wave is a smart home protocol, it was developed specifically for communication between smart devices. Thanks to the sub-gigahertz frequency, the signal propagation is good and thanks to the Z-Wave MESH network topology, devices far away from the central unit can communicate properly (devices under continuous power supply act as signal transmitter). Z-Wave devices need a Z-Wave Hub or USB coordinator (connected to a miniPC, for example) to work. The Z-Wave protocol uses a unified communication command class, so that thousands of products from hundreds of different brands are compatible with each other, and devices in a Z-Wave system can work together as a network. A Z-Wawe network can contain up to 232 devices. An additional advantage of the Z-Wave protocol is that it supports Association Groups, which allow direct associations to be created between individual devices in the network. An additional advantage of Z-Wave devices is that they can be configured with a number of parameters at the protocol level, so that they can be customised to meet the most specific needs.

The new Shelly Qubino Wave i4 DC is a special product of the manufacturer, the DC version of the Shelly Qubino Wave i4. The i4 DC does not have a built-in relay, but it can detect the status of up to 4 switches or other DC devices and based on that, it can control other Shelly Wave relays or trigger a scene using the gateway.
Wave i4 DC is the version specifically designed for DC switches and is also suitable for monitoring the status of gate motors, alarms, bells and other DC devices.

It can also be used to wirelessly "link" a DC switch (e.g. in a caravan or motorhome) to a control device connected to a Shelly Wave relay installed elsewhere. Mounted behind the Shelly Wave i4 DC switch(es), the module detects changes in the status of the switches and can send a switching command via Z-Wave to Shelly Wave 1, Shelly Wave 1PM or Shelly Wave 2PM or other relays, even controlling several in a group with one switch. A Shelly smart relay can therefore be used in pairs even if the switch; and the controlled consumer are far apart or if there is just no wiring between them.
It is able to receive signals from up to 4 connected physical switches, and to link up to 3 events to each of them. The 3 switching modes can also be assigned with different commands in the Scene function. The Shelly Wave i4 DC can therefore also be used for scene control from a wall-mounted physical switch.
However, the Wave i4, like other Wave devices, requires a Z-Wave hub or gateway to work, the device cannot connect directly to a WiFi router.

Pairing:

The module has an "S" button, which is a function button. This button is used to start the pairing, unpairing and factory reset processes. These functions are available for a limited time after power-up.

Pair/unpair/factory reset:

Press and hold the "S" button to pair until the status LED turns blue. Then directly press the "S" button again (min 2 seconds) to initiate the mate/unmate status.

Z-Wave hubs:

Shelly has tested with the following Z-Wave hubs:

  • Home Assistant
  • Home Center 3
  • Jeedom
  • Homey
  • SmartThings
  • Hubitat.

Shelly Wave i4 DC requires a constant 5V-24V DC power supply to operate.

It expects the same voltage at its four switch inputs, and

  • detects whether the switch is turned on/off,
  • or, if not used for a switch, it detects whether there is current in the circuit.

Product features:

  • Compatible with 5V-24V DC supply voltage, constant supply voltage and supply voltage from switches/circuits must be the same
  • Also supports button combinations (3 functions per button) for a total of 12 possibilities per module (1x, 2x, hold down)
  • Directly control other Z-Wave devices via association functions 8 options per module (1x, hold down)
  • Ideal complement to the Shelly Wall Switch switch latch (1-2-4 pushbutton versions)
  • Can also be used to detect input conditions of other low current devices

Specifications:

  • Input: actuator expects DC voltage level to input terminals "i"
  • Input voltage: 5-24V DC
  • Low standby power consumption: 0.3 W.
  • Communication protocol: Z-Wave 800
  • Z-Wave frequency: 868.4 MHz (EU)
  • Range: up to 40 meters inside the building (walls can be reduced by slabs)
  • SmartStart: YES - S2 encryption: YES
  • Z-Wave repeater function: YES
  • Wireless firmware update (OTA): YES
  • Operating temperature: -20 - +40 °C
  • Size: 37 x 42 x 16 mm
  • Weight: 37g

Ounting options:

  • Typically fits in a standard size mounting box, but a recessed mounting box is recommended, using it will speed up module installation time
  • DIN-rail adapter (separate product) for mounting on C-rail, can be aligned

The Shelly Wave i4 requires a constant 5-24V DC supply voltage to operate.

It expects the same voltage at its four switch inputs, and:

  • detects whether the switch is on or off,
  • or, if not used for a switch, it detects whether there is current in the circuit.

The Wave i4 is compatible with the new Shelly family of light switches with a four-button "scene control" switch, which can be easily clicked into the back to create commands to control other devices (either group or scene-based) in your Shelly system.

(The four-button wall switch is not included with the Shelly Wave i4 DC, but is available as a separate product.)

Like other smart relays, this one requires not only phase conductors but also neutral wire to operate.
